I choose Idywilde flies for one reason…Quality. As a fly shop owner and guide I need my flies to catch fish and hold up. If a customer buys a 2-dollar fly from you and it falls apart after a dozen casts, don’t expect him back soon. In northern New Mexico we fish dry dropper set ups 90% of the time. I’ll use a big size 6 stimulator as my indicator fly for my clients because it floats high and is visible. This summer I guided using the same stimulator for six days in a row before it finally fell victim to a pine tree high overhead. After six days of fishing that fly could have passed for a new one!
Before opening my shop I worked for other outfits where the owner would buy flies based on margins instead of quality. Idylwilde delivered nearly 100% on time – the other guys, well, we’re still waiting for most of that order. The summer of 2004 found my fly business in crisis mode. The fly vendor I had relied upon for the last decade delivered only a fraction of my preseason, and a look at the fly bins confirmed that quality was slipping as well.
After shopping around and several long conversations with Zach, I rolled the dice and switched all my trout fly business to Idylwilde. The effect was immediate and dramatic.
