JASON HARTWICK: Jason grew up fishing the Klamath and Trinity rivers. His patterns reflect a passion for floating lines and trouty steelhead in the late summer and fall. Steelhead in clear water prefer a certain balance of subtle and intrigue, just enough flash and shine to get a fish's attention but without spooking them from a shallow tailout. An important part of Jason's style is the use of materials such as peacock, pheasant, mallard, and wood duck which have natural shine and translucent qualities without being dyed. Something he picked up from great tiers such as Syd Glasso and Walt Johnson. Some would say his patterns are influenced by the low water California style made famous by Lloyd Silvius, creator of the Silver Hilton. I don't know much about all that tradition, but I do know that Jason's flies work, and he knows his whiskey.
