Yuba Pupa I designed this fly to match the complex caddis hatches of the lower Yuba River, a local tail water. I needed a pattern that could swing as an emerger, drift as a pupa under an indicator and to be dropped off the back of an adult. I was trying to create a pattern that had "depth" and was life-like in the water. Many of the existing flies imitating caddis pupae were either all olive or all tan. Patterns that are all one color don't provide very distinctive features when light is refracted or reflected off of them. I wanted the Yuba Pupa to look alive and have what I call "depth". To achieve depth it is necessary to have a variety of colors represented. For instance, a light body with darker wing buds and two colors of dubbings. When wet these dubbings pull back over the lighter body resulting in a pattern with significantly more depth and movement than a single color pattern. The Yuba pupa has a very accurate silhouette with two wing buds coming out the side and a lighter colored back and a darker front similar to the natural. The UV flash and top flash give the illusion of movement or air bubbles trailing off the pupa. For added fish-ability I tied this fly on a straight eye hook so the pattern can be swung to the shore at the end of a drift. I fish this pattern any time of the year fish are eating caddis pupae. In a more hatch specific sense I fish it leading up to, during, and sometimes after the hatch. Hogan Brown Yuba Pupa - Designer
